How to Find Your Body Shape
Three tape measurements are all it takes: bust, waist, and hips. The calculator compares the proportions between them and matches you to one of the five classic shapes: hourglass, pear, apple, inverted triangle, or rectangle. Knowing your shape makes clothes shopping faster and cheaper, because it tells you in advance which cuts will flatter and which will fight you.
Measure Yourself Correctly
- Bust: around the fullest part of your chest, tape parallel to the floor, wearing a non-padded bra.
- Waist: the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the navel. Stand relaxed, do not pull the tape tight.
- Hips: the widest point around your hips and seat, feet together.
The Five Shapes at a Glance
| Shape | Proportions | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Hourglass | Bust and hips balanced, clearly smaller waist | about 8% of women |
| Pear | Hips noticeably wider than bust | about 20% |
| Rectangle | Bust, waist, and hips similar | about 46% |
| Apple | Fullest through the middle | about 14% |
| Inverted triangle | Bust or shoulders wider than hips | about 12% |
Estimates from a North Carolina State University study of over 6,000 women’s body scans. Rectangle is by far the most common, so if the calculator says rectangle, you are in the majority, whatever fashion magazines imply. For the health side of your proportions, the waist to hip ratio calculator is the tool doctors actually use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my body shape change?
Yes. Weight change, strength training, pregnancy, and menopause all shift proportions. Training glutes and shoulders in particular can visibly move a rectangle toward an hourglass silhouette over time.
What is the most common body shape?
Rectangle, at close to half of adult women in body scan research. The hourglass, the shape most clothing is designed around, is one of the rarest at under 10 percent.
Does body shape affect health?
Shape as a style category does not, but fat distribution does. Carrying more fat around the middle (apple pattern) is linked to higher metabolic risk than carrying it on hips and thighs. Waist to hip ratio captures that difference.
My measurements are between two shapes. Which am I?
Many people are hybrids. Use the shape the calculator picks as your primary guide, and borrow styling ideas from the neighboring one; the rules blend the same way bodies do.
