How the Ovulation Calculator Works
Ovulation usually happens about 14 days before your next period starts, regardless of how long your cycle is. So with a 28 day cycle, ovulation lands around day 14; with a 32 day cycle, around day 18. Enter the first day of your last period and your average cycle length, and the calculator maps out your fertile window for the next four cycles.
The fertile window covers about six days: the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself. Sperm can survive up to five days in the reproductive tract, while the egg lives only 12 to 24 hours after release. That is why the two or three days right before ovulation carry the highest chance of conception.
Signs You Are Ovulating
- Cervical mucus turns clear and stretchy, like raw egg white
- A small rise in basal body temperature (0.3 to 0.5 °C) the day after ovulation
- Mild one-sided lower abdominal ache (mittelschmerz)
- A positive ovulation test (LH surge), typically 24 to 36 hours before release

How accurate is an ovulation calculator?
It is a solid starting estimate for regular cycles, but ovulation can shift with stress, illness, travel, and sleep. Treat the dates as a window to begin testing, not a guarantee.
What if my cycles are irregular?
Calendar predictions get unreliable when cycle length varies by more than a few days. Ovulation test strips and cervical mucus tracking work much better in that case, and a persistent pattern of irregular cycles is worth mentioning to your doctor.
When should I take a pregnancy test?
The most reliable time is the day of your missed period or later. Testing earlier than 12 days past ovulation often produces false negatives because hCG has not built up yet. The results above include this date for you.
Can you get pregnant outside the fertile window?
It is unlikely but not impossible, because ovulation timing shifts from cycle to cycle. If you are avoiding pregnancy, calendar math alone is not reliable contraception.
